What Vepev Is and How It Works
Vepev combines an antihistamine with vitamin B6 in one extended-release tablet that carries the effect through the night. Doxylamine blocks the histamine signals that trigger the vomiting reflex. Pyridoxine supports the pathways that settle pregnancy nausea.
What Are Vepev Tablets Used For?
Vepev may help reduce nausea and vomiting of pregnancy when diet and lifestyle changes are not enough:
- Persistent morning nausea in the first trimester
- Vomiting that disrupts eating or sleep
- Nausea continuing despite smaller meals and rest
It is not for motion sickness or non-pregnancy nausea.
How Should You Take Vepev?
Take one Vepev tablet at bedtime, or as your doctor directs. If nausea continues, your doctor may add a morning tablet, usually to a maximum of two daily. Swallow it whole with water on an empty stomach; crushing or chewing destroys the extended-release coating.
Is Vepev Safe During Pregnancy?
Vepev is formulated specifically for pregnancy and is among the best studied options for morning sickness. It should still be taken only on prescription, at the lowest effective dose. It is not recommended while breastfeeding, since doxylamine passes into breast milk.
Possible Side Effects of Vepev
Drowsiness is the most common effect of Vepev, which is why it is taken at night. Other reported effects include dry mouth, dizziness, headache, constipation and blurred vision.
Warnings and Precautions
Vepev is prescription-only under DRAP guidance. Tell your doctor or registered pharmacist before use if you:
- Drive or operate machinery, since drowsiness is common
- Take sedatives, sleeping tablets or alcohol
- Take, or recently took, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor
- Have asthma, glaucoma, or a stomach or bladder obstruction
- Are breastfeeding
Vepev may cause a false positive on some urine drug screens.
Storage and Safe Handling
Store Vepev below 30C in the original blister, away from light and moisture, out of reach of children. Check the expiry date.
