Phenobarbitone (also called Phenobarbital) is a barbiturate that works as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant.
It is widely used as an antiepileptic drug and for its sedative-hypnotic effects.

Uses:

  • Epilepsy / Seizure control (generalized & partial seizures)

  • Status epilepticus (emergency seizure treatment, usually IV/IM)

  • Sedation and hypnosis (rarely used now due to safer alternatives)

  • Sometimes used in neonatal seizures
