How Ventolin Inhaler Works

The active ingredient, salbutamol, is a selective beta-2 agonist. When inhaled at the recommended dose, it stimulates the beta-2 receptors in the smooth muscle lining the airways, causing them to relax and open up. This delivers short-term relief that usually lasts around 4 to 6 hours in conditions where the airways narrow reversibly.

Usage and Safety of Ventolin Inhaler

Dosage

• Adults: For a sudden attack, the usual dose is 1 to 2 puffs, up to three or four times a day.
• Children: Generally half the adult dose.
• Always follow the exact dose your doctor prescribes for you.

Side Effects

• Very common: trembling or shakiness (tremor).
• Common: headache, a faster heartbeat, palpitations, and muscle cramps.
• Rare: low blood potassium, which can occasionally become serious; irregular heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation; and widening of blood vessels in the hands and feet.
• Very rare: allergic reactions (including swelling, hives, wheezing, a drop in blood pressure, or collapse), hyperactivity, and a feeling of muscle tension.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following, as they may interact with salbutamol: beta-blockers such as propranolol, MAOI antidepressants, digoxin, theophylline or aminophylline, corticosteroids such as prednisolone, diuretics such as furosemide, or diabetes medicines such as insulin, metformin, or glibenclamide.

Indication

Ventolin Inhaler is used to relieve airway tightening (bronchospasm) in all forms of bronchial asthma, as well as in chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

When Not to Use

Do not use it if you are allergic to salbutamol or any other ingredient in the inhaler. Inhaled salbutamol is not intended for stopping premature (early) labour or a threatened miscarriage.

Precautions

Beta-2 agonists such as salbutamol can lower blood potassium, and this effect may be stronger during a severe asthma attack. The risk can rise when the medicine is used alongside xanthine derivatives, steroids, or diuretics, or when oxygen levels are low. In these cases your doctor may monitor your potassium levels.

Warnings

Warning 1:

Asthma is usually managed in a step-by-step way, with your response reviewed both clinically and through lung-function tests.

Warning 2:

Needing your reliever more often can signal that your asthma is getting worse. If this happens, your treatment plan should be reassessed, since deteriorating asthma can become life-threatening. Your doctor may start or increase preventer (corticosteroid) therapy and, if you are considered at risk, may ask you to monitor your peak flow daily.

Warning 3:

If your usual relief feels weaker or wears off sooner than normal, do not increase the dose or use it more often on your own. Seek medical advice instead.
